Most of the people who work with us are volunteers, drawing on their skills to help others. People of all ages volunteer for Age Concern because it's fun and rewarding. You can see a list of our volunteers on our staff page.

Not only does Age Concern Trafford benefit from your time and experience, but you benefit by learning new skills and meeting new people.

All volunteers will need to:

  • Make a regular commitment to the same time/s each week
  • Be available for between 1 to 4 hours each time depending on the volunteer role you take
  • Be involved with the promotion of Age Concern Trafford and Age Concern Trafford Trading Limited services and products
  • Be willing to learn and develop your knowledge and skills

All volunteers will be:

  • Trained as appropriate to their role
  • Supported by a manager

Details about the tasks involved in some of these roles are below:
 

Advice & Information Service


Tasks:

  • To work as part of a small team to help provide a friendly, efficient and effective advice and information service to older people living in the Borough of Trafford.
  • To answer inquiries in person or by telephone from the information resources available.
  • To give out free information leaflets and factsheets as appropriate.
  • To make a record of all inquiries and responses in accordance with the established procedures.
  • To operate the telephone system and to use established procedures for dealing with callers, recording messages and transferring calls.
  • To keep up to date with information resources and to keep up to date in the use of the resource packs.

Requirements:

You will need a friendly and approachable manner, good interpersonal skills, a good telephone manner, an understanding of the need for confidentiality and impartiality, and a willingness to learn and develop your knowledge and skills.


Charity Shops

Tasks:

  • To work as part of a team to help deliver a polite, friendly and efficient service to customers.
  • To help with the sorting and labelling of clothes and other items in accordance with established procedures
  • To help with the preparation of items for resale, including steaming where necessary.
  • To serve and assist in the shop with customers.
  • To help maintain a safe, clean and tidy environment, including helping with the display arrangement of goods in the shop.
  • To help maintain efficient systems for the smooth running of the shop, including recording information and the operation of the till in accordance with established procedures.
  • To help maintain a friendly and welcoming environment and atmosphere for other workers and customers of the shop.
  • To be involved in promoting the work of Age Concern Trafford.
  • To carry out all work in accordance with the current Health and Safety Regulations and under the direction of the staff.


Day Support Centres

Tasks:

  • To work as part of a team to create a friendly, social and stimulating environment and atmosphere for members.
  • To help with the preparation of the room for use by members.
  • To provide practical and personal assistance to members as needed.
  • To assist in the planning and running of activities.
  • To be sensitive to the needs and wishes of the members and to be aware of the need to encourage independence.
  • To help with the preparation of the refreshments and the serving of food and drinks in accordance with established procedures.
  • To help maintain a safe, clean and tidy environment.
  • To help maintain efficient systems for the smooth and safe running of the centre, including the recording of information in accordance with established procedures.

Insurance Sales

Tasks:

  • To work as part of a trained team to help promote and provide a friendly and efficient Insurance service to older people in the Borough of Trafford
  • To provide information on the range of Insurance available, and including liaising with other workers as appropriate to ensure an accurate and efficient service.
  • To assist in the selling of Insurance cover and other products to the public,  when appropriately trained.
  • To give out free information leaflets as appropriate.
  • To deal with all required paperwork and receipt of monies in accordance with the established procedures.
  • To operate the telephone system and to use established procedures for dealing with callers, recording messages and transferring calls.
  • To keep up to date with current policies, procedures and practices.
  • To be prepared to undertake and maintain training to FSA regulation standards and to accept supervision and direction within those guidelines
  • To help maintain a clean and tidy office and efficient procedures
